The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation is the world's leading nonprofit dedicated to curing spinal cord injury and improving quality of life for people living with paralysis. Over four decades, the Foundation has invested more than $145 million in SCI research. In 2019 it pioneered venture philanthropy in SCI through early investments in ONWARD Medical and AXONIS Therapeutics. In 2024 the Foundation co-founded SCI Ventures — a dedicated venture philanthropy fund — alongside Wings for Life, Spinal Research, Promobilia Foundation, and Shepherd Center, with Adrien Cohen (co-founder of Tractable and Lazada) as Managing Director. SCI Ventures targets up to 20 portfolio companies across therapies restoring function and technologies with potential for full spinal repair. Portfolio includes ONWARD Medical (epidural stimulation + BCI), AXONIS Therapeutics (neuromodulation drug discovery), Sania Therapeutics (gene therapy for neural circuits), and AUGMENTAL (MouthPad BCI). All profits recycle back into further research investment.
