WISE is a medical device company innovating the next generation of implantable electrodes for neuromodulation and neuromonitoring. WISE’s proprietary Supersonic Technology produces electrodes that are highly stretchable, thin, and soft, overcoming limitations of conventional metal wire leads. This yields neural electrodes that conform closely to nervous tissue and are extremely durable against bending or stretching. The company has commercialized the WISE Cortical Strip (WCS®) for intraoperative brain monitoring, which is CE-marked in Europe, and is developing stretchable leads for spinal cord stimulation and other neuromodulation applications.

WISE’s electrodes are made by embedding conductive platinum tracks within an elastomeric (silicone) substrate. The result is a flat, ribbon-like lead that can flex and stretch without breaking or losing contact – in contrast to traditional leads that are stiff or prone to fracture if bent. These stretchable electrodes maintain excellent conductivity and interface with nervous tissue over a large area, allowing “gentle” contact with the cortex or nerves. In practice, when WISE’s cortical strip is laid on the brain surface during surgery, it adheres smoothly to the gyri, capturing high-quality electrocorticography signals for monitoring and mapping. The same design principles are applied to leads for spinal cord stimulators: a stretchable paddle lead can be inserted percutaneously (through a needle) rather than via open surgery, yet once in place, it expands and conforms to the cord for effective stimulation coverage. WISE’s electrodes have been tested to be biocompatible and stable, and their manufacturing process (using laser ablation and deposition) enables custom geometries for different targets.

On the neuromonitoring side, the WISE Cortical Strip is used during brain tumor and epilepsy surgeries to monitor EEG and evoke responses, helping surgeons identify critical areas – its flexibility improves contact and signal quality, and it can be safely left in place continuously during surgery. In neuromodulation, WISE is targeting conditions like chronic pain: their soft spinal leads can be placed via a minimally invasive procedure and may reduce complications like lead migration or tissue damage. Soft leads could also enable new targets (e.g., peripheral nerves or brain regions that move with the body), expanding therapy options. With regulatory clearances underway (FDA submissions for WCS® in the US), WISE’s stretchable electronics platform stands to enhance many neurodevices by making the interface between machine and tissue far more ergonomic and reliable. This ultimately means safer, more effective neurostimulators and neural monitors for patients, fulfilling the promise of bioelectronics with a material science breakthrough.
